This study focuses on the heavy rain stream in July 2020 in Japan and its economic damage by using an agent-based model with the actual supply-chain relations of 1.6 million firms in Japan. We reveal that the peak of the daily loss is after the heavy rain event with two weeks delay. This belayed peak after shocks mean that the shock causes demand and supply reductions and they propagate into the supply chains. We also reveal that if an area is economically less important, it would probably be not well protected from the rain-related disaster, and vice versa. Moreover, we reveal that multiple heavy rains in a short period cause more damages on the economy because the damages remain on supply chains and interact each other. |
