A major task in describing lexical polysemy is to represent connections between word-senses to establish the unity of the polysemous word. We argue that many such connections are most efficiently described at the level of semantically and syntactically relevant word classes, e.g. ""verbs of impact"". A set of semantic roles with their formal marking is inherited from such a class by its members. Describing diathetic and metonymical shifts at class level would allow to dynamically produce some of the individual word-senses of the members. Metaphorical shifts correlate less well with syntactic behavior, but patterns of regular metaphor can be used to guide the interpretation of occasionalisms.
