In this paper, we investigate the effects of channel aging in the 5G new radio (NR) frequency range 1 (FR1) multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system. Wireless channel ages between the timing of uplink channel estimation and that of downlink beamforming transmission. This can lead to severe performance degradation due to inaccurate beamforming weight calculation resulting in inter-user interference. We demonstrate the severity of channel aging problem in 5G NR MU-MIMO with system level simulation of 3GPP channel model, and additionally show that a simple channel prediction method can potentially compensate a part of the throughput penalty. |
