Imaging metabolomics is a method to capture many metabolites in tissues and cells with their anatomical structures being maintained. While imaging mass spectrometry is a powerful method, strong laser irradiation may cause auto-oxidative denaturation of metabolites in the samples. Infrared laser-assisted, gold nanoparticle-based surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enables to overcome such limitations. We applied SERS imaging to decipher roles of reactive sulfur species including polysulfide in determining cancer chemoresistance and prognosis in patients.
