In this paper, we present an application-specific Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) network architecture by leveraging the Control and User Plane Separation (CUPS) in mobile core networks to offload data traffic from different applications to different edge servers for application-specific processing. We first apply deep-learning to classify traffic into application-based EPS bearers. Then, to physically isolate EPS bearers of the same PDN connection, we slice the PDN gateway (P-GW) into multiple physically distributed P-GW slices so that its attached edge server can be distributedly deployed on- demand. We prototype the proposed application-specific MEC network architecture using modified OpenAirInterface LTE/5G software. Our modification is 3GPP-compatible so that it could be acceptable by mobile network operators. It is applicable in both non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) 5G networks. |
