To enhance self-studies of Java programmingby novice students at various levels, we have proposedthree element fill-in-blank problems in the Web-basedJava programming learning assistant system (JPLAS)with the workbook code collection,that is composed of 16categories. Basically, fill-in-blank problems are used forstudying the grammar and basic programming skillsthrough code reading. In this paper, we overview theseproblems and discuss their use in a Java programmingcourse.
