A heterogeneous optical network is a network where various data rates can be supported through optical transmission. The purpose of such network is to provide flexibility in bandwidth allocation that will eventually lead to higher cost and energy efficiency. The main candidate architectures are WDM mixed line rate (MLR) optical networks and OFDM-based flex-grid elastic optical networks (EON). Their difference mostly lies in the transmission technology behind the respective transponders. In this paper, we conduct a comparison in terms of cost and energy efficiency between three different architectures: i) WDM MLR, ii) EON and iii) Hybrid optical network that uses both WDM transponders and BVTs. |
