Overseas Membership applies to candidates who reside outside Japan and do not hold Japanese citizenship, under the current official rules.

How to join

Prepare once, then apply online

The official application system handles the membership procedure. Preparing your endorser and documents first will make the process easier.

Prepare an endorser

Recommendation from one eligible IEICE member is required. A student applicant may exceptionally ask an instructor at the same school when necessary.

Prepare student proof

Student applicants should prepare an accepted PDF document showing enrollment and the expected graduation date or course period.

Register your email

Enter a PC email address. The application system sends the URL for the online form to the registered address.

Submit and pay

Complete the form, payment and recommendation. After Board approval, membership begins at the start of the following month.

Monthly timing

Recommendation approval and first-year payment must be confirmed by the 15th for expected enrollment at the beginning of the following month.

Eligibility

Overseas Membership is for non-Japanese citizens residing outside Japan. Applicants living in Japan use the individual membership route for residents of Japan.

Basic overseas dues

JPY 7,000 per year for an Overseas Member and JPY 2,000 for an Overseas Student Member, excluding the printed IEICE Journal.

One endorser is required

The endorser should normally be an IEICE Member. Student applicants may exceptionally ask an instructor at their school.

Complete by the 15th

First-year payment and recommendation approval must both be completed by the 15th for expected enrollment on the first day of the following month.

Overseas Membership

Overseas Membership applies to candidates who reside outside Japan and do not hold Japanese citizenship. A non-Japanese citizen residing in Japan should use the application route for residents of Japan.

Member

Applicants should have specialized knowledge, expertise or comparable experience in electronics, information, communications or related fields and support the objectives of IEICE.

Student Member

Applicants should be enrolled in an applicable course at a university, college or technical college and support the objectives of IEICE.

  • Working adult students are not eligible for Student Membership and should apply as a Member.
  • People affiliated only with a laboratory, rather than enrolled as students, should apply as a Member.
  • Student applicants must submit accepted proof of enrollment.
Accepted student documents Examples of PDF evidence to prepare before opening the application form

Prepare a PDF copy of one of the following documents:

  • A student identification card showing its expiration date.
  • A certificate of enrollment showing the issue date, graduation date or course period.
  • A tuition-fee receipt or captured payment screen for the semester that includes the intended enrollment month.
  • Another official document proving that student status will continue after joining IEICE.
Applicants currently residing at a related academic institute may also be asked to prepare a certificate of residence. Confirm the latest requirement with the Membership Section when the applicable document is unclear.

FAQ

Questions international applicants often have

Can IEICE complement my other professional-society memberships?

Yes. Many researchers and engineers participate in more than one society. IEICE has a particularly clear role when your study, collaborators, technical interests or career connect with Japan.

Are all IEICE activities available in English?

No. English-language publications and selected international activities are available, but some domestic meetings, materials and discussions are mainly in Japanese. Check the language shown for each activity.

Can I remain connected after leaving Japan?

Yes, subject to keeping your membership details and applicable category current. Online services and International Sections provide ways to continue participating from abroad. Contact the Membership Section when your residence changes.

Can I choose an International Section outside my country of residence?

Under the current service rules, all individual members may choose one International Section regardless of country or area of residence, with no registration fee.

Do I need an endorser?

Yes. One eligible endorser is required. Student applicants may exceptionally use an instructor from their school when an IEICE member recommendation is difficult to obtain.

Are dues reduced when I join in the middle of the fiscal year?

No. IEICE's fiscal year runs from April to March, and annual dues are not prorated for admission during the fiscal year.
