Summary:
In this paper, performance of multidimensional coded QAM is studied for single-carrier millimeter-wave transmission considering the power amplifier (PA) nonlinearity. Single-carrier transmission is emerging interest in millimeter-wave and upcoming terahertz wireless communications. In order to speed the transmission data rate, use of high-order QAM is one of the most promising methods. However, since the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) increases with higher-order constellation in QAM signals, linearity of power amplifiers is highly required. In this paper, we attempt to mitigate this problem by using QAM with multi-dimensional trellis coded modulation (MD-TCM QAM). In this paper, we assume a millimeter-wave amplifier model applied to IEEE802.11ad standardization, and evaluate the effect of amplifier nonlinearity in MD-TCM QAM and conventional coded QAM by error rate performance. As a result, it is found that the MD-TCM QAM is less affected by the nonlinearity than the conventional QAM. It is also found that 4[dB] higher input power to the PA can be available by using MD-TCM QAM.
