Summary:
As a kind of passive wavelength router, arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR) is a promising candidate to construct optical interconnection/switching networks. However, the scalability of AWGR is restricted by coherent crosstalk, which makes it difficult in practice to build large-scale AWGR-based interconnection/switching networks. To solve this problem, we present a modular method of designing an array of small-size AWGRs, such that it is functionally equivalent to an AWGR with large port count. In this way, we can obtain a large-scale wavelength router with small coherent crosstalk. We further show that this method can be applied to different scenarios, including the design of large-scale optical interconnection systems with low cabling complexity, and modular wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) switching networks.
