Summary:
"The transmission capacity of telecommunication using optical fiber continues to expand every year. It is well-known that the capacity limit of single-mode fiber (SMF) will be reached in the near future. Spacedivision multiplexing (SDM) has been proposed as a way to overcome this limit1). So far, Multi-core Fiber (MCF) with multiple cores in one fiber, Few Mode Fiber (FMF) with multiple propagation modes, and MC-FMF hybrid scheme have been proposed2)?DIn MCF transmission, in order to use the optical device developed for the existing SMF transmission line, it was necessary to couple light of each core of MCF to SMF.3) This will make the whole system very bulky. So we have implemented various functional devices directly between MCFs without converting to SMF by using spatial optical coupling system4)?DThe direct functional device by MCF enables integration of multiple functions, thereby improves greatly the space fficiency?DIn this study, in order to demonstrate this concept, we have prototyped a MCF device that integratesmultiple functions and realizes miniaturization."
