Summary:
In this paper, the following three types of ESD protection devices with low capacitance used for high-speed interfaces are evaluated by transmission line pulse measurement: Gas Discharge Tube(crowbar), Polymer ESD(crowbar), and Metal Oxide Varistor(clamp). The influence of rise time and pulse width on low capacitance ESD protection devices was revealed. V-I characteristics were different between the clamps and the crowbar devices. Crowbar devices are appropriate for protection against high voltage ESDs. Slower rise times and narrower pulse widths increase the trigger voltage for crowbar devices, especially Gas Discharge Tube. This TLP evaluation result well corresponds to system-level ESD tests using an ESD gun. Polymer ESD shows good suppression characteristics and less sensitivity to the rise time and pulse width. Polymer ESDs are effective for high-speed signal line protection.
