Summary:
We have been studying methods for evaluating environmental sound that contribute to the preservation of a good sound environment. The complexity of environmental sounds measured around airport and along railroad lines was evaluated using Fractal dimension. The Fractal dimension is a measure of the strength of self-similarity in a wave form or image, and the state in which self-similarity is weak is considered to be complex. As a result of evaluating the complexity of environmental sounds, it was found that the Fractal dimension is affected by factors such as regional characteristics and the proximity of aircraft, but the validity of the results has not been demonstrated. This paper investigates the Hausdorff distance between partial waveforms extracted in a time window and examines the distribution of the relationship that this distance is minimum. The distribution is random for complex waveforms, but when self-similarity is strong, it may be concentrated in a specific time period. This paper describes the results of the analysis using environmental sounds measured around the airport.
