Summary:
Recently, we reported that a free-running laser diode could generate a chaotic output without the need for external perturbation or forcing. Because of a competition between two polarization modes, we observed the generation of a polarization chaos dynamics with a symmetric double-scroll attractor. Here, we bring new experimental results and show that the system is in fact asymmetric due to a misalignment of the anisotropies in the laser cavity. In addition, we demonstrate that this new dynamics can be exploited in a chaos-based random bit generator and report exciting performances.
