Summary:
The progressive miniaturization of electronics components makes today feasible to exploit the nano?scale level. At this scale, phenomena peculiar of the quantum world arise, which can be exploited to realize innovative and potentially breakthrough devices. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of one such device, the Casimir nonlinear oscillator is analyzed. It is shown that, due to the nonlinear nature of the Casimir force, the oscillator can exhibit Smale horseshoes, and the mechanism leading to their birth is revealed.
