Summary:
In this paper, a novel multi-compartment neuron model with a learning mechanism based on spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) is proposed, where the dynamics of the model is designed based on the concept of an asynchronous bifurcation processor (ABP). It is shown that the proposed model can reproduce a wide variety of dendritic phenomena such as forward and backward propagations of action potentials. It is also shown that the present model can realize basic STDP learning. Furthermore, the model is implemented in an FPGA circuit, and the dendritic phenomena and the STDP learning are validated by experiments.
