Summary:
We demonstrate a mechanism of breakdown of a two-frequency torus in a piecewise smooth map, resulting in the transition from a mode-locked periodic orbit to chaos. It occurs through wrinkling of the nonsmooth unstable manifold that makes its length extend to infinity. We explain the mechanism using the concept of stable foliation.
