Kou Miyake

It is my great pleasure to hold the World Telecommunications Congress 2012 (WTC 2012) in Miyazaki, Japan. The WTC is a prestigious international congress on telecommunications, which builds upon the traditions of the International Switching Symposium (ISS) and International Symposium on Services and Local Access (ISSLS), and attracts leading experts from industry, academia, and government to envision the future of telecommunications.

We have witnessed dramatic changes in the telecommunications industry over the past decades. I believe that no one can accurately envisage the future of telecommunications by themselves. The WTC provides a forum to exchange views and ideas on the future of telecommunications and to establish human networking for the continuing exchange of ideas.
Japan is one of the most advanced countries in the telecommunications industry. We boast the most aggressive broadband penetration by FTTH, the most advanced mobile communications by 3G and LTE, and the most advanced research and development activities in industry, academia, and government. We believe that hosting WTC 2012 here in Japan is a landmark event for the future of the WTC and telecommunications.

The Great East Japan Earthquake struck the Northeast part of Japan on March 11, 2011. We would like to express our deepest sympathy for those who lost their lives in the disaster and express our condolences to their families. We are working hard to recover from the disaster and its aftermath. We sincerely appreciate the support and encouragement received from foreign countries during this recovery. We truly believe that the people of Japan will get through this difficult time and the telecommunication industry will play an essential part in the recovery.

WTC 2012 is financially supported by several patron companies. Platinum patrons include NTT and Mitsubishi Electric. Gold patrons include NEC, Juniper Networks, Hitachi, Cisco Systems, Ericsson and TOYO Corporation. Silver patron includes KDDI R&D Laboratories. Without the support from these patrons, WTC 2012 would not be possible. We extend our deepest appreciation to them.

WTC 2012 is sponsored by the Communications Society of the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE-CS) and technically co-sponsored by the VDE/ITG and the IEEE Communications Society. Without the support from these academic societies, we could not hold a successful WTC 2012. We would like to express our sincerest appreciation to them.

WTC 2012 is jointly operated and managed by the Local Executive Committee and the WTC International Technical Committee including the WTC council. They have done an outstanding job in all areas of organization, including congress venue arrangement, financial and registration management, publicity and publication, and technical program organization. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to them.

Miyazaki, the venue of WTC 2012, is in the Southwest part of Japan. It is one of the most popular tourist designations in the country. It has a beautiful coastline facing the Pacific Ocean. Miyazaki boasts many shrines associated with the myths and legends of the birth of Japan. We look forward to seeing you and many friends and colleagues in the telecommunications industry in Miyazaki, and we hope that the WTC participants enjoy the congress and their stay in Japan. Please join us in participating in the WTC 2012.

Welcome to Japan! Welcome to Miyazaki!

Kou Miyake,
General Chair of the WTC 2012
