Summary:
ASIC technology has been applying to plasma wave instruments from 1 Hz to 10 kHz for reducing resources (mass, volume and power). We developed a search coil with a built-in ASIC preamplifier in order to miniaturize a conventional search coil magnetometer along with a conventional preamplifier. The conventional preamplifier needs a radiation shield of several hundred grams due to a weak radiation tolerance of 100 krad or less. In this study, the ASIC preamplifier is placed inside the new search coil. The copper coil of new search coil is used as a radiation shield for the ASIC preamplifier. Furthermore, the ASIC preamplifier achieved a high radiation tolerance of 400 krad or more by applying a rad-hard layout. The conventional radiation shield increasing the mass is eliminated by the radiation shield of solenoid coil and the ASIC preamplifier with the high radiation tolerance. We evaluated the magnetic characteristics and the radiation tolerance of the search coil with the built-in ASIC preamplifier. From the evaluation results, the new sensor is acceptable for probing the plasma waves under high-radiation environments. The new sensor drastically reduced a mass and a power consumption by approximately 30% and 99% than those of the conventional search coil and preamplifier.
