Summary:
An intensity modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) optical coherent reception applying the Kramers-Kronig (KK) relation (KK reception) has been proposed as a method for low-priced high-capacity links [1]. In this method, the received signal must satisfy the minimum phase condition, which requires an intense unmodulated tone along with the data signal. In this paper, we numerically investigate a probabilistic shaping (PS) technique that relaxes the power requirement for the unmodulated tone. n intensity modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) optical coherent reception method applying the Kramers-Kronig (KK) relations has been proposed as a method for low-cost links in recent years[1]. In the KK system, the received signal must satisfy the minimum phase, which requires high power efficiency and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) . In this paper, we introduce a quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) scheme with probabilistic shaping (PS) to the KK system and compare its transmission characteristics with those of the conventional uniformly distributed QAM by numerical simulations. The simulation results have predicted that the proposed scheme could relax the power requirement for the unmodulated optical tone.
