Summary:
The nonlinear response of optical modulators is one of the major issues in analogue radio-over-fiber (A-RoF) systems because of the high signal-to-noise ratio required. Meanwhile, the nonlinear distortion of a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) can be compensated for by applying an appropriate chromatic dispersion. In this paper, we experimentally study the effect of chromatic dispersion on nonlinear distortion through a MZM, where the electrical pre-distortion is employed to equalize the nonlinear response of the modulator. It has been demonstrated that the compensation of modulation distortion by chromatic dispersion is effective even for the system employing the electrical pre-distortion to mitigate with modulator nonlinearity.
