Summary:
Free-space optics (FSO)-based satellite communication has recently attained noticeable research interests worldwide thanks to its extremely high data-rate service and global coverage. Despite its potential, numerous impairments, such as atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors, significantly degrade the system's performance. Thus, mitigation techniques are required to achieve reliable transmissions. These techniques, however, heavily depend on the accuracy of the feedback channel state information (CSI), which tends to be outdated over long transmission distances. In this paper, we proposed a novel approach that combines adaptive rate and power control with machine learning (ML)-based channel prediction, whose purpose is to forecast the future CSI with a time span that can counteract the induced feedback delay. The numerical results show that the system with predicted CSI offers a considerable performance enhancement compared to the one with delayed CSI, while maintaining very close energy efficiency as in the case of perfect CSI. This confirms that channel prediction is vitally necessary for our adaptive rate and power control system.
