Summary:
Underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) has tremendous capabilities for searching and excavating seabed resources however, the available area of UOWC has been limited in the deep ocean as it's SNR is severely deteriorated by the solar noise and any other background noise in shallow water. This paper proposes UOWC using angular diversity receiver which is consisted of multiple photo diodes (PDs) arranged at different angles for reducing the solar noise and using maximal ration combining scheme as diversity combining method. Also, we compare the two different area's average SNR of 8 different types of receivers and consider the PD placement that provides the most stable communication performance. As a result, in the 2m*2m area, the receiver with PDs are arranged evenly (Rx8) showed the highest SNR. On the other hand, in the areas of 8m*8m, the receiver with most PDs are placed at side of the receiver (Rx1) showed the best SNR when the background light noise was significant. In addition, while receivers other than Rx1 have SNR degradation of more than 10 dB due to the solar noise, the Rx1 receiver can limit the SNR degradation to 7dB. This result confirms that Rx1 shows the most stable communication performance against temporal changes in the solar noise.
