Summary:
To promote research on advanced networking technology, developing large-scale testbeds is considered highly important. On the other hand, large-scale network testbeds are in transition from those mainly for academic research to those with wider objectives. From a survey of testbed projects in the US and the EU, we discuss two important trends in the development of large-scale network testbeds. One is that advanced network programmability is the key technical driver. The other is that future large-scale network testbeds should consider their echo-systems involving real applications and their users.
