Summary:
A novel small omnidirectional microstrip antenna is proposed based on a compact left-handed metamaterial on LTCC (Low Temperature Co-fire Ceramic) substrate. It is shown that the designed architecture can exhibit double negative parameters and support backward wave in a broadband of 4.6 GHz - 5.3 GHz. By using 3D full-wave simulation, a miniaturized microstrip antenna is modeled and characterized. Results show that the presence of the metamaterial fillings can indeed greatly reduce the physical dimensions from 0.5?? to 0.28??, while its farfield pattern is significantly different from that of a conventional half-wave-length microstrip antenna.
