Summary:
Software-defined networking (SDN) technology enables us to configure network switches flexibly through remotely located controllers. Distributed placement of SDN controllers improves scalability and robustness by reducing the computation load of each controller and establishing cooperation among controllers. In this article, we design and evaluate a distributed SDN control plane (C-plane) reconstruction mechanism to deal with the situation of network fragmentation induced by large-scale failures, such as disasters. Our reconstruction mechanism also includes a procedure for the merging of fragmented C-planes in the event that fragmented networks are reconnected by a failurerecovery technique. We implement our mechanism in an SDN experiment system consisting of Ryu controllers and Lagopus software switches. Through the results of the experiment, we validate that the proposed mechanism is able to reconstruct the C-plane of each fragmented network smoothly when network fragmentations occur, and that it reunites fragmented C-planes into one when the fragmented networks are reconnected.
