Summary:
Multi-user MIMO is an effective technique to improve the link capacity with limited bandwidth. In wireless communications, multipath fading is always present and degrades the transmission quality, thereby reducing the link capacity. Spatial diversity is an indispensable technique to improve the transmission quality in a fading environment. In this paper, we apply user-wise joint transmit/receive diversity (JTRD) to multi-user MIMO to improve the link capacity in a fading environment. User-wise JTRD jointly optimizes spatial diversity at base station (BS) and user sides. It is based on maximizing the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the given realization of each user's single-user MIMO channel. The achievable link capacity of zero-forcing (ZF) based multi-user MIMO using user-wise JTRD in a Rayleigh fading environment is evaluated by Monte-Carlo numerical computation method and is compared with that using user-wise diversity. User-wise diversity is based on maximizing the received SNR assuming the best one of BS antennas and is implemented at user side only.
