Summary:
Wide area coverage for Internet of Things (IoT) devices evolved in last 3-4 years with the introduction of 3GPP defined Cellular IoT (CIoT) technologies. The number of connected devices and possible applications are growing at a fast pace giving rise to billions of new devices being connected online. In this talk, we first provide a short overview of 3GPP CIoT technologies with a particular focus on 3GPP Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT). We then proceed to research challenges and the work done in our research centre, which spans several topics such as: i) deploying massive real-world NB-IoT testbed of about 150 NB-IoT nodes, ii) providing precise measurements and models for energy consumption of NB-IoT modules under real-world operating conditions, iii) analyzing the performance of random access channel under high uplink traffic load, iv) developing and deploying UAV-based NB-IoT base station for dynamic deployment of mobile NB-IoT cells, and v) anomaly detection for secure IoT using deep learning at the edge. We finalize this talk with current and future evolution of NB-IoT technology within 3GPP 5G standardization.
