Summary:
The fifth generation mobile communication system (5G) is designed to have new radio capabilities to support not only conventional enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) communications but also new machine type communications such as Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency communications (URLLC) and massive Machine Type communications (mMTC). In such new areas of URLLC and mMTC, mobile operators need to explore new use cases and/or applications together with vertical industries which are potential users of 5G, in order to fully exploit the new 5G capabilities. Recently, 5G New Radio (NR) based vehicular communication (5G NR-V2X) have been considered to be one of new 5G URLLC use cases in which both low-latency and ultra-reliability are required. Then, we have developed a new prototype system based 5G URLLC technologies for application to truck platooning. This paper presents our recent research and development activities on 5G NR-V2X communications towards application to automated follower truck platooning, and field trial of truck platooning based on vehicle-control message transmission using our developed 5G NR-V2X prototype system in a practical environment with the condition of mixing with various other vehicles on a public express highway in Japan.
