Summary:
Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) technologies based on multi-core fiber (MCF) and/or multi-mode fiber (MMF) have attracted a lot of attention as a promising approach to overcome the capacity limitation of the conventional optical fiber. This paper reviews the recent progress of SDM technologies including the ultra-high-capacity transmission and ultra-long-haul transmission. The roadmap of SDM technologies discussed in the Technical Committee on Extremely Advanced Optical Transmission Technologies (EXAT) is also described.
