Summary:
For reducing the time and labor-cost of sewer inspection, the authors have been developing a drifting wireless camera-based sewer inspection system. The narrow space in a sewer pipe makes it difficult to transfer data for long-distance with radio communication. So far, we have investigated the wireless data transfer performance with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN by using single-antenna devices and a real small-diameter underground pipe. However, the performance with multiple-antenna devices in a small-diameter underground pipe is unknown. This paper presents the first measured performance of 2.4 GHz and 5GHz IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN using a single-antenna data transmitter device and a multiple-antenna data receiver device and presents the effectiveness of maximal ratio combining (MRC) in radio communication in a 250 mm- diameter sewer pipe.
