Summary:
"Research and development of multicore erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (MC-EDFAs) has been advanced for achieving long-distance multi-core optical fiber transmission system. Employing a cladding pumping on an MC-EDFA is being studied for the purpose of reducing power consumption. Several experimental evaluations of the amplification characteristics on a cladding-pumped MC-EDFA (CP-MC-EDFA) has been conducted [1-5]. Because the multiple cores of a CP-MC-EDFA share the same pump light, pump depletion change due to the change in input signal power in a particular core may affect the gain in the other cores, which introduce inter-core cross-gain modulation [6,7]. In this paper, we investigate the gain change due to inter-core gain-modulation on CP-MCEDFs whose number of cores are 7 to 37 by using the average inversion level model [7]."
