Summary:
Spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) has been regarded as a strong candidate for further high capacity1. As a part of a SDM system employing MCF, multicore erbium doped fiber amplifiers (MC-EDFA) has been studied2. MC-EDFA is not only expected to enable accommodation of the transmission medium for ultra-high capacity but significant reduction of power consumption of amplification2. Low power operation of EDFAs is crucial in cases of limited available power supply or high density integration3. For the reduction of power consumption, common cladding pumping (CCP) has been demonstrated. In this scheme, 980nm pump laser diode (LD) has generally been used and promising in the L-band amplification. However, some challenges remain in the C-band since the short optimal EDF lengths limits the available gain1. Therefore, we have so far demonstrated improvement of cladding pumping efficiency by using 1480nm LD and confirmed gain improvement of 2.6dB4. In this study, we report further gain improvement by changing input power and optimizing EDF length.
