Summary:
"Several mode-division-multiplexing transmission experiments employing a few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) have been studied for achieving high-capacity transmission systems utilizing space division multiplexing technologies [1-7]. One of the important challenges in realizing a practical transmission system is the differential modal gain (DMG) of the FM-EDFA. To improve the DMG, an FM-EDFA that employed a ring-core erbium-doped fiber (RC-EDF) was proposed, and it was confirmed both theoretically and experimentally, that 2-LP (LP01, LP11) mode signal amplification with a low DMG was achieved [8-12]. In recently, a further increase in the mode multiplexing number was explored for increasing the transmission capacity [5-7, 13]. In this study, we investigated the DMG property of a RC-EDF to clarify the possibility of an RC-EDF for being used as a 3- to 5-signal LP mode amplification medium by the simulation of the C-band WDM amplification characteristics. To study the property, we defined two parameters, DMGYY-XX which was the gain deference between WDM signal channels of LPXX mode and LPYY mode at the shortest wavelength, and WDGXX which was the gain deference between gain of LPXX mode at the shortest and the longest wavelength, where XX and YY indicate LP mode number. Level curve maps of the maximum DMGYY?XX and the maximum WDGXX on the allowable 3- to 5-LP mode area map was generated for inner and outer radius combinations of the RC-EDF. The simulated areas were a 3-signal LP mode area ([LP01, LP11, LP21]), two 4-signal LP mode areas ([LP01, LP11, LP21, LP02] and [LP01, LP11, LP21, LP31]), two 5-signal LP mode area ([LP01, LP11, LP21, LP31, LP02] and [LP01, LP11, LP21, LP31, LP41]). It clarified that it is possible to realize the amplification with a maximum DMGYY?XX of ?2 dB for the 3-LP [LP01, LP11, LP21] modes, ?1 dB for the 4-LP [LP01, LP11, LP21, LP31] modes and ~2 dB for the 5-LP [LP01, LP11, LP21, LP31, LP41] modes, and a maximum WDGXX of ?1 dB for the 3- to 5-LP mode. In addition, it also cleared that 4- and 5-LP mode amplification which not including LP02 mode can be realized small DMG. The results further indicated that it is possible to realize an amplifier for the 3- to 5-LP mode with a relatively small DMG using RC-EDF."
