Summary:
The optical losses and modal crosstalk at a splice point in few-mode fibers are important parameters in mode division multiplexing transmission. To measure such parameters, a method has been developed that uses waveforms obtained with multi-channel optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) and numerical analysis [1]. However, obtaining the parameters is dependent on the initial conditions of the analysis. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel method that can estimate the losses for each mode and the modal crosstalk in two-mode fibers (TMFs) without numerical analysis.
