Summary:
In this paper, a novel broadband, dual-band and high-gain metamaterial microstrip antenna, which radiates a monopole-type radiation in the lower band and a high-gain end-fire radiation in the upper band, has been proposed. By modifying the metamaterial element structure from the prototype in literature, a better performance has been achieved. The antenna has two impedance bandwidths which fall from 3.4 to 13 GHz and from 14.5 to 17.7 GHz, respectively. The antenna gain is generally higher than 4 dB, with the peak gain of 7.8 dB. The efficiency of the antenna can achieve as high as 96% and is generally higher than 75% in the working bandwidth.
