Summary:
This paper deals with the influence of metal cover planes close to SMD filter structures. The low-pass structures are used for EMC purpose in the automotive industry and work in a frequency range of 100 kHz to 4 GHZ. Up to now, the influence of a metal housing is neglected during the design phase. In this paper, an ungrounded metal cover plane is assumed to be part of the housing. It will be shown by measurement and simulation that this plane changes the filter behavior significantly. These changes depend of the filter components used, the filter attenuation and the frequency area. So, some theoretical explanations are derived to provide a good understanding of the occurring effects. Finally, a full wave parameter study was carried out in order to confirm the theory and to derive some design rules.
