Summary:
Several of the Taiwan-to-island submarine cable systems constructed in the early days consisted of dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF; G.653), which was designed for 10G single-wavelength system without dispersion accumulation. However, as service demand grows, single-wavelength system doesn遯カ蜀イ apply to the current submarine system. In order to reuse the existing submarine cable and fulfill the demand of capacity, we use DSF to carry multi-wavelength signals. However, the four-wave mixing effect causes serious impacts on density wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system for the reason that the dispersion of DSF in C-band is close to zero. In this paper we propose high-capacity submarine transmission system architecture based on a heterogeneous submarine system, with the use of wavelength selection, power adjustment, and system design, we overcome the four-wave mixing effect and validate the capacity of the submarine system can reach 1.6T bit/s, re-open a new life for the dispersion-shifted submarine cable.
