Summary:
Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication with an M2M gateway is expected to be spread rapidly with the penetration of smart devices and sensors. Because increasing connected devices lead to repetitive manual configuration on an M2M gateway that is equipment to ensure the connected devices interworking and interconnection to networks one of the key factors in M2M communication is ease in configuration even for novices. In this paper, a server-assisted provisioning method for an M2M gateway is newly proposed, in order to support users including the novices when they use M2M communication services, e.g., e-health and smart grid. The proposed provisioning method is implemented in a prototype system and the experimental results show the method can reduce the number of steps by half and the time to configure an M2M gateway by 25 % compared to the conventional manual configuration.
