Summary:
We investigate self-organization of both connections and phases in a system of coupled movable phase oscillators, in which the self-movable units on two-dimensional plane have their internal states which is described by phase oscillator model. In this system, both the connections linking the oscillators and the phases of the oscillators evolve simultaneously. The oscillators are coupled with its neighbors and the movement of the units is governed by the collective dynamics of the oscillators. We found that this co-evolving dynamical system exhibits four types of distinct collective behaviors of oscillators, which can be characterized by the topological structure of the network: an aggregate, a repulsive, a reticulate, and a islands-structure states. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these topological structure in a population of the coupled oscillators can be adaptively reorganized in response to the change in the environment. This behavior is consistent with the experimental observation of slime mold. We believe that this simple model of co-evolving dynamical system allows us to understand and clarify the fundamental mechanism of self-organization of adaptive network in biological and ecological systems.
