Birdwatching is a popular hobby around the world. Birders often find identification of species a challenging task that will take many years to master. Computer-assisted bird identification was mainly based on voice recognition methods until recently, as there were more work exploring on the image-based methods, especially using deep learning. This paper reviews the recent progress in image-based bird identification methods as well as their major implemented applications in the market. iNaturalist stands out among the popular tools to assist users in bird identification using deep networks.
