Summary:
We describe some novel nonlinear dynamics in strongly gain-switched laser-diodes (GS-LDs). Under strong pulsed excitation schemes, second-quantized-state (SQS) laser oscillation often occurred, and it contributed to form short optical pulses appeared in the initial stage of the entire laser oscillation. It was found that a proper level DC current superposition can enhance the SQS laser oscillations. However, excessive increases in the DC current suppressed the SQS laser action, instead made dominant the FQS laser operation. A notable feature of the present SQS laser oscillation is it can give single envelope picosecond optical pulses having a much higher peak-power compared to the conventional GS-LDs based on the first-quantized-state (FQS) laser transition. Therefore, we expect that appropriately designed SQS LD pulse sources may provide novel core technologies for functional biomedical imaging as well as for laser micro-machining.
