Summary:
Wearable devices should not be made of rigid and heavy materials, causing discomfort to wear. The issue of discomfort may be serious for wearable devices, which have also taken on a role in healthcare equipment in recent years. In this study, we developed an optical soft interface for wearable devices that combines flexibility, versatility, and lightweight. The proposed soft interface enables multimodal sensing based on the encoding using optical scattering and decoding techniques based on the concept of hyperdimensional computing. As a demonstration, we show a soft touch panel. We also show the effectiveness of hyperdimensional computing for the purpose of interface; it significantly reduces processing time, compared to deep learning.
