Summary:
A novel internal WWAN handset antenna comprised of a printed monopole strip and a monopole slot formed by the clearance region of the same is presented. The monopole strip generates its quarter-wavelength resonant mode to form a wide upper band for the antenna to cover the GSM1800/1900/UMTS operation (1710~2170 MHz). By adding a low-profile C-shaped strip to the long open edge of the clearance region of the monopole strip on the main circuit board of the handset, an open-slot region can be formed. The open-slot can function as a monopole slot radiator to contribute a resonant mode at about 850 MHz in the desired lower band. With the aid of an on-board band-stop matching circuit, an additional resonant mode is generated to combine with the monopole slot mode to achieve a wide lower band to cover the GSM850/900 operation (824~960 MHz). The size of the proposed design is mainly dominated by the clearance region of the monopole strip, which has a small size of 9 x 45 mm2 on the main circuit board. The antenna hence occupies a small board space to achieve the penta-band WWAN operation in the 824~960 and 1710~2170 MHz bands. Details of the proposed design are described.
