Summary:
A novel radiation pattern reconfigurable planar antenna is presented. A miniaturised magnetic loop antenna is placed inside the electric loop antenna so that the antenna is installed on single layer and has compact size despite of using two different antennas. The antenna can operate as ELM and MLM by using pin diodes. Radiation patterns of the two modes can compensate each other's null, due to their orthogonality. Finally, it can be improved overall system performance by switching two modes depending on communication environments.
