Summary:
This paper presents investigations on broadband circular patch antennas. The influence of PCB antenna structures on the radiation pattern and impedance matching is shown. The principle impact of permittivity, loss-factor, substrate thickness and antenna geometry on the radiation characteristic is illustrated. Furthermore, approaches for broadband patch antennas as solid structures, one-sided PCB-antennas and two-sided PCB-antennas have been compared to each other and their individual advantages and disadvantages are presented. The investigations are based on simulations with EMPIRE XCcelTM [1] using the efficient numerical finite-difference time-domain method. An optimized antenna type is presented, which covers most of the up-to-date and future communication standards in the frequency range between 1.7 GHz and 6 GHz.
