Summary:
Thales Alenia Space has developed a facetted reflectarray, made of five flat panels arranged along an offset parabolic profile. The first motivation is the cost and schedule reductions that are expected due to the simplicity and recurring aspects of the reflectarray concept. The application is very challenging due to the stringent RF, thermal and mechanical requirements applicable to such antennas : Highest gain as possible over the coverage, large bandwidth, low cross-polarization radiation, harsh space environment. To meet such specifications, the following innovations have been developed :The antenna is made of a multiple set of flat panels arranged along an offset parabolic profile; a new phase shifter element, with low losses and linear behavior over a large bandwidth (Up to 30%), has been designed; a synthesis process has been developed including various steps and particularly the cancellation of the cross polarization component of the radiation pattern.
