Summary:
In this work a novel S-band active frequency selective surface (AFSS) for electronically steerable radiator and reflector array (ESRRA) antenna is proposed and tested. The ESRRA antenna prototype is formed by integrating a coaxial colinear (COCO) antenna with symmetrical-anchor shaped multiple AFSS units, to produce omnidirectional sweeping range of entire azimuth plane which is suitable for cellular system base stations. The AFSS array loaded with varactors are biased by a 0-30 V continuously variable voltage. Design principals and working mechanism is analyzed, simulated and realized. The AFSS array and the whole antenna system is fabricated and tested. The radiating direction of the antenna is continuously tunable, and a fine beam scanning adjustment is realized. Measured results show that front-to-back ratio in the directivity pattern is 20 dB with the depth of null point at -34 dB and the gain of the antenna can be promoted to 8.83 dBi.
