Summary:
There is an ever-increasing demand for higher Internet bandwidths, while the emergence of new technologies such as cloud services and the Internet of Things introduce new demands regarding bandwidth flexibility. To address these issues, we propose using a duobinary signaling scheme in a LR-PON to meet the higher bandwidth demands. To deal with flexibility needs, the cascaded extension of the BiPON protocol, CBI-PON, is introduced. CBI-PON offers the much needed dynamic bandwidth, while reducing the network’s power consumption. CBI-Repeaters and CBI-EndONTs, based on the presented CABINET ASIC, respectively offer an 80 x and 6 x power consumption reduction compared to currently available commercial equipment.
