Summary:
Digital filters are one of the most widely used signal processing tool. Their advantages are simplicity and processing speed. Especially, they are suitable to extract or to suppress periodic component in input signals. However, when input signals include step signals, filters cause overshoot and ringing around time / space discontinuous samples. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel low-pass filtering method for discontinuous signal without overshoots and ringing. The proposed filter consists of a differentiator and a low-pass filter. The differentiator detects discontinuous samples. According to the output of the differentiator, a part of the input signal are replaced to have continuity. Then, replaced signals are denoised by a low-pass filter. Through some examples, the effectiveness of the proposed method is discussed.
